What changed on the CQC register

The Care Quality Commission publishes the register of home care agencies every week, then deletes the file and replaces it. Nothing is archived. So by the time you notice an agency has gone, there is no record of when it went, and no way to find out afterwards.

We keep every file. This is the record from 5 August 2026 onwards: 561 changes across 2 comparisons.

Providers that have taken on a service somebody else used to run, across the whole record. A sale never appears in the register as a sale, so this is assembled by matching a cancelled registration to a new one at the same address in the same week.

How to read this

A service leaving the register is the entry people misread most often. It can mean the agency closed. It can equally mean it merged, moved its registration to a new legal entity, or handed a council contract over. The published file records the fact, never the reason, so we report the fact and stop there.

A sale is invisible in the raw file. CQC cancels the old registration and issues a new one, so an agency changing hands looks like a closure and an unrelated opening in the same week. We pair the two up by address and report it as what it is. Those pairs are counted once, under changed hands, and not again under the other two.

Dates are the date we saw the change, which is the week CQC published it. The change itself may have happened a few days earlier.
